Brownstown-St. Elmo and Altamont are in to the Championship Semifinals while South Central and CHBC dropped into the Consolation side of the bracket after the first day of the Girls National Trail Conference Basketball Tournament on Monday. In the tournament’s first game of the day, South Central fell behind in the first quarter after a 17-8 run by Dieterich and could not catch up as they fell 56-34 in the tournament’s preliminary play-in game. With the loss, South Central drops into the Consolation side of the bracket where they will take on CHBC. Dieterich moves into the quarterfinals to face top-seeded St. Anthony tonight at 6:00pm.
In the second game of the day and the first quarterfinal round game, BSE used a third quarter run to pull away from CHBC. A back and forth first quarter battle saw the Bombers hold a slim 15-14 lead going into the second quarter. The Bobcats would have some trouble keeping up with BSE and were outscored 13-8 in the second quarter with BSE extending their lead to 28-22 at halftime. The Bombers would pull away in the third quarter, with a 20-8 run, as their lead grew to 48-30 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bobcats fought back hard and outscored BSE in the fourth, but their 22-18 advantage in the quarter would not be enough to close the gap as BSE got the 66-52 win. CHBC drops into the Consolation side of the bracket to face South Central tonight at 7:30pm. BSE advances to the Championship Semifinals to face Altamont.
In the second quarterfinal game of the day, Altamont used a balanced scoring attack with four starters scoring in double digits to hold off Neoga. After getting out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter, Altamont would be outscored 17-9 in the second but remained ahead 29-26 at halftime. A 17-13 third quarter advantage would edge the Altamont lead out to 46-39. Neoga would come back and outscore the Altamont 19-17 in the fourth quarter, but the effort was not enough as Altamont would hold off Neoga enough for a 63-58 win. Altamont moves into the Championship Semifinals to face BSE on Thursday at 7:30pm.
