The Vandals became the first team this season to surpass 50 points against undefeated Auburn, but couldn’t keep up with a talented Trojans team Tuesday night in a 76-57 home loss.
After the lead changed hands seven times in the early going, Auburn (10-0) opened up an eight-point lead with an 11-3 lead midway through the first half and extended its lead to double digits for good with a strong start to the second half.
Sophomore Qwentyn Stombaugh led the Vandals’ best offensive effort since their Dec. 10 win over South Central with 19 points to go along with four assists and two steals. Wade Brannon added 12 points and eight rebounds and Andrew Casey had 11 points, but Auburn showed why its receiving votes in the latest Associated Press Class 2A state poll.
The Vandals (4-6) will continue a tough stretch of their schedule with another home game Friday against Staunton (7-2, 2-0 South Central Conference) after taking on a pair of undefeated teams in Carlyle (7-0) and Auburn in their last two games.
