St. Elmo-Brownstown put together a second half comeback and topped South Central 42-37 to claim the title of the Mulberry Grove Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday night. After the teams traded baskets for the first half of the first quarter, South Central would take a lead that would hold at the end of the first quarter 13-8. SEB would be held to just six points in the second quarter as South Central pushed their lead out to ten points, going up 24-14 at halftime. SEB began their comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 12-6 in the frame, cutting the South Central lead down to 30-26 to start the fourth quarter. As SEB closed the gap, a three pointer from Collin Maxey would give the Eagles a 36-35 lead and Maxey would hit another to extend the SEB to four points. South Central would score just two more points as SEB would go 3 for 4 at the free throw line in the closing minute to secure the 42-37 win. SEB moves to 4-0 on the season and will be off until Friday when they have their home opener against Neoga in a National Trail Conference matchup. South Central’s first loss of the season puts them at 3-1 and they will have their home opener on Wednesday, hosting Patoka-Odin.
