Vandalia softball outhit Pana but came up just short, 5 to 4, to the Panthers in a non-conference game on Monday. The Lady Vandals were able to get on the scoreboard first as a RBI single from Katy Sefton scored Elaina Hagy for a 1-0 Vandalia lead. They would add on to that lead in the top of the third inning as Bella Walk led off the inning with a triple and then came into score on an error by the Pana third baseman for a 2-0 Vandalia lead. A RBI single from Mady McCall would bring in another run in the inning to push the Lady Vandals advantage to 3-0. Pana cut into that lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-1. The two teams held each other scoreless for the next three innings before Vandalia broke through again with a RBI single from Madison Lupton that scored McCall to further edge the Vandals lead out to 4-1. Pana flipped a switch in the bottom of the seventh inning and led the inning off with a double, a triple and a single that scored two and cut the Vandalia lead to 4-3. Another double tied things up at 4-4. With bases loaded and one out, Lupton was able to get a strikeout and the second out of the inning. A passed ball on the first pitch of the next batter would allow the game winning run to come in for the Panthers as the Lady Vandals suffered the tough 5-4 loss. Vandalia is now 4-12 on the season and will get another shot at Pana today as they host the Panthers for what will be their South Central Conference matchup for the season.
