Altamont escaped a bottom of the eighth inning bases loaded situation after Vandalia put the first three runners of the inning on base as the Lady Indians pulled out a 2-1 win over the Lady Vandals at Denny’s Field in Vandalia on Thursday. After five and a half scoreless innings to start the game, Vandalia opened the scoring as Bella Walk singled to left field and Elaina Hagy would score on the throw for a 1-0 Ladt Vandals lead. The next half inning, Altamont was able to respond with a run of their own as Ella Nelson doubled to center field to bring Haley Arend home and tie the game up at 1-1. The Lady Vandals put their leadoff runner aboard the start the bottom of the seventh inning, but three straight strikeouts would cap off the inning, as the 1-1 tie would force extra innings. With one out, Sophia Pearcy singled to center field and after the second out of the inning, Sophia Long reaches base on a Vandalia error which allowed the courtesy runner, Reagan Kuenstler to score from first base and give the Lady Indians a 2-1 lead. Vandalia was not done battling and loaded the bases with the first three batters of the bottom of the eight inning as Mady McCall singled to center field, Elaina Hagy doubled to left field and Bella Walk drew a walk. But Altamont senior pitcher Grace Lemke would get the next three batters out on three straight strikeouts to end the threat and give Altamont the 2-1 extra inning win. Altamont improves to 13-5 on the season and will be back in Varsity action on Monday at Neoga for a National Trail Conference game. Vandalia drops to 4-11 on the season and will play again today at Litchfield in South Central Conference action.
