Legislation to potentially ban Native American Mascots passed the Illinois House

Some are calling out a recently passed bill in the Illinois House aimed at banning the use of native-themed schools mascots and logos as an unserious mandate that places a political agenda over real outcomes.  There was heated debate over a measure that State Representative Maurice West brought to the House floor.

State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer says the mascots are our history and they are something we revere.

Others raised concerns about the cost to school districts to change a mascot.  About 90 school districts would be affected by the ban.  The measure will now be considered by the Illinois Senate.
