Vandalia softball had trouble getting their offense going on Friday in a 5-0 loss at Hillsboro in South Central Conference play. The Lady Vandals got one of their two hits on the day in the top of the first inning as Madison Lupton singled to left field but she was stranded on base as a pair of strikeouts ended the half inning. Vandalia then found itself down early as the Hiltoppers got out to a 2-0 first inning lead. In the top of the third, leadoff batter Liah Hoyle was hit by a pitch and Lupton drew a two out walk as the Lady Vandals got a runner into scoring position, but a strikeout again ended the inning. Newton was able to push their lead to 3-0 in the bottom half of the inning on a steal of home. A leadoff walk by Mady McCall to start the fourth inning following by Katy Sefton being hit by a pitch again had a Lady Vandal in scoring position. Bases would then get loaded as Liah Hoyle was hit by a pitch but a strikeout ended the scoring threat. The Eagles again added on to their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-0. Vandalia responded with a double from Sefton in the top of the sixth inning but a pair of strikeouts ended the top of the inning. One more run from Newton in the bottom of the sixth inning closed out the game’s scoring as Vandalia suffered the 5-0 shutout loss.
