Lady Vandals Softball Drops SCC Opener at Gillespie


Vandalia softball suffered a 7 to 0 loss at Gillespie on Friday in their South Central Conference opener. The Lady Vandals trailed 3-0 to start the second inning when Elaina Hagy hit a leadoff single to left field for the first hit of the day for Vandalia but Gillespie held Vandalia to just first base in the inning. The Miners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead out to 7-0. The Lady Vandals collected a hit in both the fourth and fifth innings from Madison Lupton and Kenlie Finn and put one runner in scoring position, but continued to be held scoreless by Gillespie. Bella Walk led off the sixth inning, but was stranded there to end the inning. The 7-0 lead stuck for Gillespie as the Lady Vandals took the conference loss. Vandalia will have the weekend off before returning to action at home on Monday with Mulberry Grove visiting Denny’s Field.
