South Central Rides Early Runs to Slim Win Over Altamont

South Central’s two first inning runs held up as Altamont was held to one run and the Lady Cougars topped the Lady Indians 2 to 1 in National Trail Conference action on Tuesday. A leadoff walk by Kyra Swift to start the game gave South Central an early base runner. After the first out of the game, Kaitlyn Swift singled to right field to score Kyra Swift as South Central went up 1-0. With two outs and a runner at third base, a passed ball allowed Kaitlyn Swift to score from third base and push the Lady Cougars lead to 2-0. Altamont’s first and only run of the game didn’t come until the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Sophia Long singled to right field and Avery Fleeharty followed that up by reaching base on an error and Long was caught trying to advance to third on the play. Fleeharty advanced to second on a single to left field by Ella Nelson and then scored when Grace Lemke reached base on a fly ball error by South Central and the Lady Indians cut the Cougars lead down to 2-1. That run would be the last of the scoring in the game as both teams would go scoreless over the remaining four innings with just three more hits between the two teams in the last 4 innings.
