Vandalia softball collected 13 hits but managed just five runs in a 15 to 5 non-conference loss at Greenville on Monday. Greenville led 2-0 early and Vandalia cut that lead in half with a run in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by Madison Lupton to cut it to 2-1. A run by the Comets in the bottom of the third inning put Greenville on top again by 2 runs, 3-1, to start the fourth inning. The Lady Vandals put their first two runners aboard via walks and a single loaded the bases. A double to left field by Lupton scored Rebekah Miller and Katy Sefton to tie the game up at 3-3. With two outs in the inning and bases loaded, Elaina Hagy doubled to score Lupton and Bella Walk and put Vandalia on top 5-3. That would cap Vandalia’s scoring in the game as Greenville put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, another five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Lady Vandals 15-5. The two teams will meet again next week in Vandalia for their South Central Conference matchup. Vandalia drops to 1-5 on the season and will play St. Elmo-Brownstown at Deken Park in St. Elmo today.
