Vandals Hold off Cumberland for First Win of Season


The Vandalia Vandals scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to come away with a 4-2 victory over the Cumberland Pirates. After two scoreless innings, the Vandals got on the board in the top of the third when Kohnor Depew led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Andrew Casey would then single to score Depew to give the Vandals a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back hit by pitches would load the bases for Brock Willenborg, and he would reach on an error to score Chase Cearlock giving the Vandals a 2-0 lead. After Cumberland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2, Vandalia would retake the lead when Qwentyn Stombaugh reached on a one-out walk, and stole second, later advancing to third on a dropped third strike. After Owen Halford would get hit by a pitch, Stombaugh would score on a passed ball giving the Vandals a 3-2 lead. Adam Buscher would add an insurance run, doubling to left-center field to give Vandalia a 4-2 lead. The Pirates would load the bases at the bottom of the seventh inning, but Stombaugh would end the game with a strikeout to secure the Vandals with a 4-2 win. The Vandals improve to 1-1 on the season. They will return to action on Tuesday to take on Hillsboro.
