Three Vandals Wrestlers Into Championship Matches, Five Still Alive in Wrestlebacks


Three Vandals wrestlers picked up Championship Semifinals wins Friday night and advance to the Championship matches tonight while two others will be in the Wrestleback Semifinals this morning. Max Philpot at 113, Preston Waughtel at 120 and Tyson Waughtel at 126 will all wrestle for 1st and 2nd while Dillon Hinton at 150 and Ross Miller at 175 go to the Wrestleback Semifinals where they will wrestle to determine if they will compete for 3rd/4th or 5th/6th. All five of those wrestlers are guaranteed medalists for the tournament as the top 6 in each weight class medal. Three more wrestlers will have to win one more match in order to guarantee their spots for a medal. Aiden Evans at 106, Parker Ray at 157 and Kaden Tidwell at 215 will have to get through the Wrestleback Quarterfinals this morning with a win putting them in a top 6 spot. The Wrestleback Quarterfinals will begin at 9:00am this morning with Semifinal Wrestlebacks at 11:00am and the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th place matches at 1:00pm. After an afternoon break, the Grand March will be held at 5:30pm and the Championship matches will get underway at 6:00pm.

Full Wrestler-by-Wrestler Day Two Breakdown:

Aiden Evans, 106lbs: Evans beat Jaxsun Owens of Canton in the Second Round of Wrestlebacks and advances to the Wrestleback Quarterfinals where he will face Landon Near of Sterling Newman Central Catholic.

Max Philpot, 113lbs: Philpot beat Dylan Eimer of Stanford Olympia by Decision (7-0) in the Semifinals and advances to compete in the Championship match where he will face Austin Hagevold of Woodstock Marian.

Preston Waughtel, 120lbs:  P. Waughtel beat Adam Glauser of Richmond Burton by Fall in 1:40 in the Semifinals and advances to compete in the Championship match where he will face Brayden Teunissen of Woodstock Marian.

Tyson Waughtel, 126lbs: T. Waughtel beat Dawson Hawthorne of Belleville Althoff by Tech Fall (15-0) in 2:53 in the Semifinals and advances to compete in the Championship match where he will face Cooper Morris of Coal City.

Cole Yarbrough, 138lbs: Yarbrough beat Nicario Bella of Chicago (Perspectives/Leadership) by Tech Fall (15-0) in 1:47 in the First Round of Wrestlebacks. Yarbrough lost to Jude Finch of Rockridge by Fall in 0:59 in the Second Round of Wrestlebacks.

Dillon Hinton, 150lbs: Hinton lost to Vance Williams of Woodstock Marian by Decision (12-6) in the Championship Semifinals and will now go to the Wrestleback Semifinals where he will face either Keyton King of Salem or Henry Hilldreth of Stillman.

Parker Ray, 157lbs: Ray beat Tony Jones-Blakely of Chicago Hope by Fall in 2:55 in the First Round of Wrestlebacks and beat Brock Owens of LeRoy by Major Decision (14-6) in the Second Round of Wrestlebacks. Ray will face Carson Bissey of Olney in the Wrestleback Quarterfinals.

Artan Mustafa, 165lbs: Mustafa beat Nick Grant of Seneca by Major Decision (13-2) in the First Round of Wrestlebacks and lost to Brock Finch of Coal City by Tech Fall (15-0) in 3:51 in the Second Round of Wrestlebacks.

Ross Miller, 175lbs: Miller lost to Blake Livdahl of Richmond Burton by Decision (6-5) in the Championship Semifinals and will now go to the Wrestleback Semifinals where he will face either Ryan Rink of Tolono Unity or Colin Hughy of Trico.

Kaden Tidwell, 215lbs: Tidwell beat Dan French of Woodstock Marian by Decision (6-3) in the Second Round of Wrestlebacks and will face Devon Blanchard of Sandwich in the Wrestleback Quarterfinals.

Dominic Swyers, 285lbs: Lost to Cade Odell of Princeton in the First Round of Wrestlebacks.
