Altamont girls basketball battled hard from the tipoff to the final buzzer but came up just short, falling to Tuscola by one, 32 to 31, at the NTC-CIC Shootout hosted by Macon Meridian on Saturday. An early three from Ella Nelson would get the scoring started for Altamont before Tuscola pulled head 6-3. A put back basket from Reagan Kuenstler and a bucket by Kaylee Lurkins would put the Lady Indians up 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. Offense was hard to come by in the second quarter as defense ruled the quarter. Altamont would break through with a basket by Avery Aldrich but that would be the only scoring for either team in the quarter as Altamont held a 9-6 lead at halftime. An 8-3 Indians run to open the third led by another three from Nelson and five more points from Lurkins would push the Altamont lead to 17-9. Tuscola would flip the momentum though and close the quarter on an 11-5 run of their own to pull within two as the Indians led 22-20 at the end of the third quarter. Shortly into the fourth quarter, Aldrich and Lurkins would each hit from inside the right block for a 26-20 lead. Tuscola again fought back through with a 9-0 run to take the lead from the Indians and go up 29-26. Another bucket from Aldrich and then a left corner three from Nelson had Altamont up 31-30 with under a minute remaining. Tuscola would regain the lead 32-31 and the Lady Indians had a shot to win it from the corner but it did not go as Altamont took the hard fought 32-31 loss. The Lady Indians move to 8-12 on the season and will begin play in the National Trail Conference Tournament on Monday when they face Neoga at 1:00pm.
