Mulberry Grove Wins, SEB Falls on Second Semifinal Night of St. Elmo Holiday Tournament


Mulberry Grove picked up a 14-point win, 54 to 40, over Patoka-Odin while St. Elmo-Brownstown dropped a close game, 46 to 43, to Windsor/Stew-Stras in Consolation and Championship Semifinal action at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on Friday night. In the first game of the night and the second Consolation Semifinal of the tournament, Mulberry Grove was held to just three baskets as they fell behind 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Aces would fight back in the second quarter and go on a 17-8 run fueled by 10 points from Hagan Henrichsmeyer as he hit back to back three pointers at the end of the quarter to put Mulberry Grove up by one, 24-23 at halftime. The Aces kept their offense going in the third quarter as threes from Logan Bauer, Conner Hartmann and Jackson Icenogle helped Mulberry Grove to a 17-6 run for a 41-29 lead at the end of the third quarter. A 13-11 fourth quarter advantage would held the Aces close out the 54-40 win as Mulberry Grove moves to 5-5 on the season. With the win, the Aces have earned a spot in the Fifth Place game on today when they will face Egyptian Illini Conference rival CHBC at 4:30pm.

In the second game of the night and the second Championship Semifinal of the tournament, SEB was able to use a balanced scoring attack in the first quarter as four different Eagles scored in the first eight minutes to give them an 11-8 lead over WSS at the end of the quarter. The Hatchets would swing momentum their way though in the second quarter with a 13-8 run to take the lead as SEB counted on 6 points from Trenten Monnet to keep them within close striking distance of WSS, 21-19, at halftime. The Eagles and Hatchets would match each other point for point as they each would drop in 12 points in the quarter with Lowell Wilhour putting in six for the Eagles as they continued to trail by two points, 33-31, at the end of the third quarter. WSS went on a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter as SEB fell behind 39-31. The Eagles would hit three key three pointers, two by Graidon Wilhour and another from Ryan Powell, in the fourth quarter to stay right with the Hatchets but SEB would run out of time as they suffered the 46-43 loss. SEB drops to 6-5 on the season and they will move into the Third Place game today as they will take on Hillsboro at 6:00pm.
