Story by I70sports.com’s Seth Whitehead–
A strong defensive effort kept the Vandalia boys basketball team within striking distance of Staunton all night, but the Vandals simply couldn’t generate enough offense to get over the hump in a 49-43 South Central Conference loss at VCHS.
The Bulldogs (9-2) focused on limiting post touches to Wade Brannon inside, giving the Vandals (4-6) a number of open looks from long distance. But Vandalia hit just 7 of 25 3-pointers (28 percent) in their fourth-straight loss.
Issac Sachan led Vandalia with a season-high 12 points and two assists, while Qwentyn Stombaugh added 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brannon and Andrew Casey flirted with double-doubles with nine points and 10 rebounds apiece, but the Bulldogs showed why they have given up just 39 points-per-game this season.
The Vandals have averaged just 42 points-per-game during their four-game losing streak, the last three games of which have come against teams with a combined 28-2 record so far. They will look to get back on track on Dec. 26 when they open up play as the No. 3 seed in their own holiday tournament against Cumberland, who they defeated 57-50 in their season-opener.
