Mulberry Grove fell behind early and put together a fourth quarter comeback run, but couldn’t catch up to Windsor/Stew-Stras in a 47 to 28 loss in the quarterfinals of the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night. A handful of first quarter turnovers including two WSS steals that were converted into made layups saw the Aces go down 13-7 by the end of the first quarter. Mulberry Grove was held to just two made baskets from the field in the second quarter as they were outscored 10-7 in the quarter and they trailed 23-14 at halftime. The Aces biggest deficit would come in the fourth quarter as the Hatchets went on a 14-9 run in the quarter and the Aces found themselves trailing by 14 points, 37-23, as the game moved into the fourth quarter. The Aces would start to gain some momentum in the fourth as Landon Sugg would hit a few big shots, putting up eight points in the quarter and a key three pointer from Logan Bauer had the Aces within four points of WSS. The Aces would have to foul to stop the clock in the closing minutes and WSS would go 6 of 6 from the free throw line to edge their lead back out and Mulberry Grove would fall by nine, 47-38. The loss drops Mulberry Grove into the Consolation side of the bracket where they will face off with Patoka-Odin on Friday night at 6:15pm. The two teams have met once this season already as they played their regular season Egyptian Illini Conference game just a week and a half ago and the Aces will be looking for some revenge after they fell in that game 57-47.
