Tuesday night’s season opener between Vandalia and Altamont provided plenty of action right away with the Lady Vandals pulling away from the Lady Indians in the second half just enough for a 53-46 win. The first quarter was a low scoring back and forth eight minutes with a free throw by the Vandals putting them ahead 10-9 at the end of the quarter as Vandalia’s Ollie Whitehead had three points and Altamont’s had four points in the period. After Vandalia hit a bucket and a free throw to start the second quarter and pull ahead 13-9, Altamont pulled back to within one with a three pointer to make it 13-12. Kaylee Lurkins would begin her scoring for the night with six points for Altamont and Faith Duplayee hit a big three and another basketball for Vandalia as the two teams stayed close with the Lady Vandals holding a slim 23-21 lead at halftime. Vandalia would heat up in the second half with an 8-2 run in the first 1:23 of the third quarter as Madison Lupton scored the first five points of the quarter and Duplayee hit another big three as Vandalia went up 31-23. Altamont again battled back and a 14-6 run by the Lady Indians led by eight points from Kylie Osteen and four points from Avery Aldrich would have the Lady Indians even with Vandalia at 37-37 before a rebound and put back basket by Lurkins at the buzzer put Altamont up 39-37 heading into the fourth quarter. Vandalia would get themselves a little separation in the fourth quarter as Lupton lead the scoring charge again with nine points and Whitehead tacked on five points as they would hold off Altamont to close out the 53-46 win. Vandalia starts their season off at 1-0 and will begin play in the Nokomis Tip-Off Tournament on Thursday at 6:00pm against Lincolnwood. Altamont is 0-1 to begin the season and will have their home opener on Friday when they host Olney.
