Vandals jump out to big lead early, roll to Round 1 Playoff Win over Sangamon Valley


The Vandals jumped out early and roll to a Round 1 Playoff Win over Sangamon Valley, 41 to 21, on Friday night at Mark Greer Field.

The Vandals used special teams to build their early lead.  Kohnor Depew had two Punt Return TDs in the first 5:44 of the game—one from 72 yards and the second from 67 yards—to give the Vandals an early 13 to 0 lead.  They would add their 3rd TD of the 1st quarter with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter when Qwentyn Stombaugh would connect with Kohnor on an 89 yard TD—giving Kohnor 3 TDs in the first quarter. Stombaugh would run for one of his own, and 80 yard TD, at the 5:59 mark of the second quarter and Stombaugh and Depew would connect on another TD with 39 seconds to go before halftime to give the Vandals a 34 to 7 lead at the break.  Sangamon Valley would get it as close as 34 to 21 early in the 4th quarter, but the Vandals would add one more score to get the lead back up to 20.  Defensively, the Vandals forced 3 turnovers with Wade Brannon with a fumble recovery and Kohnor Depew and Ian Whitehead with interceptions on the night.

The Vandals now move into the second round of the playoffs for the 2nd straight year.  Waiting for them in round 2 will be the Pana Panthers.  Pana defeated Shelbyville, 21 to 18, in their first round game on Friday night to advance.  The Vandals and Pana met back in week one with the Panthers coming up with the 21 to 14 victory, the Vandals only loss of the season.  The Vandals will be at Pana in round two of the playoffs next Saturday.
