Our Pro Wire Athlete of the Week for November 2 is Vandalia football junior wide receiver and kick/punt returner Kohnor Depew.
Depew had one of his most dominating special teams games of his career leading to one of his best offensive halves and to a Vandals’ Friday night win at home over Sangamon Valley in the first round of the playoffs. Just over five minutes into the first quarter, Depew returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown to put the Vandals up 6-0. It didn’t take long for Depew to showcase his speed again as just a little over three minutes after his first punt return, Depew would again return a punt to the house going 67 yards to put the Vandals on top 13-0. After showcasing his special teams play with his first two touchdowns, Depew would hook up with quarterback Qwentyn Stombaugh on a slant pass for a 89-yard touchdown and a 20-0 Vandalia lead with just seconds left in the first quarter. One would think that would be it for the first half fireworks for Depew but late in the second quarter with just about 40 seconds remaining in the half, Depew would score his fourth touchdown of the first half on a 29 yard receiving touchdown as the Vandals would go up 34-7 and hold that lead at halftime.
Depew would not score in the second half but made his presence known on defense making a few big stops on plays where Sangamon Valley had broken loose. Depew would end the game with four touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns and the two punt return touchdowns, 118 receiving yards, 4 solo tackles, one tackle assist and an interception.
