Our Pro Wire Athlete of the Week for October 26 are South Central’s Jalynn Mitchell, CHBC’s Birgen Schlanser and Ellie Miller, Altamont’s Makaylee Splechter and Grace Lemke and SEB’s Peyton Barker.
South Central libero Jalynn Mitchell has been the steady hand of the Lady Cougars throughout the season and had one of her best four match stretches this week averaging 16.25 digs per match with 65 digs overall on the week. On Saturday, she tied her season high for digs in a match with 26 against CHBC at the NTC Tournament.
CHBC libero Birgen Schlanser has been putting up consistent double digit dig numbers all season and that led her to surpassing a milestone on Tuesday as she reached and then passed 1,000 career digs. Standing at 419 digs on the season, Schlanser finished this week with 80 digs in five matches an average of 16 digs a match, helping her team win five of their last six matches. Schlanser now stands at 1,027 digs and counting for her career.
Altamont setter Makaylee Splechter had some big shoes to fill in the setter position this season and has done just that especially this week as she has accumulated 86 assists over four matches this last week, averaging 21.5 assists per match this week. While spreading the ball around for her hitters, she has also had a strong defensive week, averaging 7.5 digs per match.
CHBC outside hitter Ellie Miller has begun to heat up at the end of the season, tallying double digit kills in three of her last five matches during the Lady Bobcats run of five wins in their last six matches. Miller averaged 7.6 kills a match with 10 kills in three matches this week while also averaging 9.6 digs a match including recording 16 and 13 digs during CHBC’s Silver Flight win last Saturday at the NTC Tournament.
Altamont middle blocker Grace Lemke is leading her Lady Indians team in both kills and digs this season as a strong part of both the offensive and defensive effort. Over the course of the last week, her defensive play has taken a step up as she averaged 20.5 digs per match across four matches this week with matches of 22, 32, 12 and 16 digs. She held steady on offense averaging 6.5 kills per match this week.
St. Elmo-Brownstown outside hitter Peyton Barker has shown quick maturity on the court this season as a freshman being counted on to step into a starting role for the Lady Eagles. The Eagles have won 8 of their last 11 matches and in that time, Barker has continued to show improvement and over the last week, has averaged 5.2 kills per match and 5.2 digs per match including her best match of the week of 7 kills and 12 digs in a win over Mulberry Grove at the EIC Tournament.
