Pro Wire Athlete of the Week

Our Pro Wire Athlete of the Week for October 5 are the South Central Middle School softball team and the Vandalia High School football team.

The South Central Lady Falcons finished their season at 21-5 after winning their third consecutive Regional and Sectional Championships. After not making it past the Quarterfinal round of the State Tournament in their previous two tries, the Lady Falcons picked up a quarterfinal win over Mazon-Verona-Kinsman to advance to the semifinals and would end up with a 4th place finish at State for the program’s first IESA State trophy.

On Friday night, the Vandalia football team jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead over state-ranked Greenville in the team’s annual Pink Bowl rivalry. The Comets would make a comeback to tie the game up before Vandalia scored late in the fourth to go up 28-21. Greenville again came back to tie the game and force overtime after ending regulation deadlocked at 28-28. The Vandals would score first for a 35-28 lead, but again Greenville would score to make it 35-34. A deflection in the end zone on the 2-point conversion attempt would give Vandalia the win and bring the Pink Bowl trophy back to Vandalia and to end the Comets’ undefeated season to put themselves at 5-1 on the season and to also become playoff eligible once again.
