"Best Of" Overall--Coach of the Year

“Best Of Overall-Coach of the Year

Jason Clay of Vandalia–

There are many great things you can say about Jason Clay. But, probably the simplest way to boil it down is the man is a winner.

In football during the 2023, the Vandals had a first year quarterback and were replacing an extremely talented Senior group. But, with a small but mighty group of Seniors and an out-of-this world year from Senior QB Andrew Kelly, the Vandals kept their playoff streak alive with 6 regular season wins and then a playoff win on the road in Round 1 at Lawrenceville. As the Vandals Head Football Coach, Clay is now 60-22 with 6 playoff wins under his belt. The Vandals have never missed the playoffs under Clay as their head coach. He will have a very talented and somewhat younger group coming in for this 2024 football season.

In wrestling, Coach Clay inherited a great program. And, at the very, very least, he has maintained that level—although you could make a very strong argument he has elevated it to even higher levels. The Vandals, year in and year out, compete in the top tournaments and against the top programs in the state and come through with impressive records year after year. The Vandals were 32-4 during the 2023-24 wrestling season in dual team action, including a 4th place finish at the Dual Team State Tournament. That was the 5th state trophy Coach Clay has brought home as head coach and his overall dual team record sits at 464-108 heading into his 19th and final season as head coach. And, his 2024-25 squad would look to be one that might have a chance of getting the Vandals their first team title since 1996.
