"Best Of" Spring Sports-Track & Field Female Newcomers of the Year

Female Newcomers of the Year

Sophie Bowers – Running in her first high school season as a junior and not even getting in meets until mid-April, Vandalia’s Bowers quickly made her presence known in the sprint events. Bowers would place in the top 3 in the 100m Dash and the 400m Dash in each of her few times on the track in the regular season, running a personal best each meet. Bowers took second in the 100m Dash at the Altamont 1A Girls Sectional to qualify for the IHSA 1A State Track Meet. Bowers would take 22nd in the rainy preliminary round of the State Finals.

Justyce Higgs – The Altamont freshman thrower built on her strong junior high career and became one of the top discus throwers in the area. Higgs put together six top 5 finishes in 11 meets including a second place finish at the Altamont 1A Sectional to qualify for her first IHSA State Track Meet. Battling through a wet and rainy preliminary round, Higgs entered the meet ranked 30th and would toss a personal best of 99’ 9” to finish in 20th.
