South Central's Kyla Engel Qualifies for IHSA 1A State Final in 800m Run; Other Area Girls Finish in Top 20

South Central junior Kyla Engel, running as a member of the Patoka Co-op track team, has given herself a chance to reach the podium at the IHSA 1A State Track meet after running a personal best of 2:23.75 for a 12th place finish in the 800m Run during the meet prelims on Thursday. Engel took an early lead in the third preliminary heat and held it for almost a lap, but fell back into the second spot along the back straightaway during the bell lap and then to fourth for the finish. With the three heat winners and then the next 9 best times advancing to Finals, Engel took the 12th and final spot to advance to Saturday’s Finals. She will run at approximately 1:55pm and will need a top 9 finish to reach the podium for a state medal.

In other preliminary action, Vandalia freshman thrower Hannah Brown came up just one place short of advancing to the Finals of the Shot Put. Brown had a best throw of 10.64m or 34’ 11” finishing in 13th place and just four inches behind the last Finals qualifier who threw 35’3”. Brown’s prelims finish was a big improvement on her seed/ranking of 20th that she came into the State Meet with out of 30 qualifying throwers.

South Central junior thrower Brooke Cowger, competing as a member of the Patoka Co-op track team, had a best throw of 31.55m or 103’ 6” in the Discus that was good for a 17th place finish.
