South Central Hands Father McGivney First Loss of Season

The all-time baseball series so far between the South Central Cougars and Father McGivney is not a long one but has had plenty of storylines just three years into it with the latest coming Friday night as the Cougars ended the Griffins bid for an undefeated season with a 4-2 win at home at Lions Field. A year and ten and a half months ago, South Central took down the Father McGivney Griffins to win the 2021 Class 1A State Championship and then the two teams met again in regular season play last Spring with Father McGivney getting a little revenge with a 10-5 win over the Cougars. This time around, South Central got an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases on a hit by pitch, walk and a single before Zane Montes put down the sacrifice to score Chase Thompson from third to tie the game at 1-1. Anthony Buonaura then gave the Cougars the 2-1 lead when he scored from third on a passed ball. The South central offense picked up again in the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk by Thompson followed by back to back singles from Aidan Dodson and Buonaura with Thompson scoring on Buonaura’s hit to edge the Cougar lead out to 3-1. Montes again came up with a sacrifice to score Dodson and push the lead to 4-1. The Griffins would get one run across on a South Central error in the top of the fourth inning to cut the South Central lead to 4-2 and that would be the final as the next three innings would be scoreless between the two teams. Dodson got the win on the mound for the Cougars going 6 2/3 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 14 batters while Ethan Watwood came on to get the final out to close out the game. With the win, South Central improves to 19-6 on the season.
