The Greenville High School Cheerleading team made history on Saturday winning their first ever IHSA State Championship taking first place in the Small Team Division.
Greenville was assigned to the Washington Sectional on March 6 and placed second in the Small Team Division with a score of 91.96, just 1.6 points behind Sectional Champion Farmington, to qualify for the State Finals.
In Saturday’s State Finals, Greenville recorded a score of 94.84 to take Small Team Championship honors. Greenville’s score was just .44 better than second place Wilmington’s 94.4 with Breese Central taking third with a 93.51.
This year’s Sectionals and State Finals were all held virtually due to COVID-19 protocols. Teams had to submit videos of their routine prior to the Virtual Sectionals and were then judged on March 6 with the Top 5 from each of the five sectionals advancing to State. Teams then had from Saturday, March 5 until this past Thursday to rework their routines, film a new video and submit it to the IHSA. State Finals judging was then done on Saturday.
